THE PHILANTHROPIST

Over the years, I have watched cancer cause pain and suffering, not only for those diagnosed with the disease but for the family members who love and care for those who are suffering. The impact is beyond devastating - I know because both my grandparents and my father were diagnosed and faced the terrible struggle that cancer forces on its victims.

After losing my grandparents to cancer, our family was determined to do something to help those suffering. That’s when we started the Tee Up For Life charity golf tournament. The tournament brings together notable golf icons, sports celebrities, media personalities, friends, family and anyone who wants to contribute to the fight against cancer. While we always have a good time, we never forget why we are there and what we are trying to accomplish. In the 17 years of existence, Tee Up For Life has raised more than $6.5 million to support the American Cancer Society and cancer research.

While TUFL had always supported ACS, in 2017, I was invited to become an official American Cancer Society Ambassador. I could not have been more honored to partner with such a reputable organization and worthwhile cause. In addition to helping raise awareness and grow support, Tee Up For Life was selected to be one of the Distinguished Events in their Premier Series.

In March, 2017 my father’s health took a turn for the worse and pancreatic cancer took his life. The fundraiser became the Rich and Norma DiMarco Tee Up For Life tournament to honor both of my parents. Additionally, the DiMarco family decided to support one of the many pay-if grants available through the American Cancer Society. We have pledged a total of $722,000 over four years to support University of Florida Dr. Ryan Thomas in conducting potentially life-saving research on pancreatic cancer. We hope and pray that his efforts will lead to improved treatment options and a cure for this disease.

While the fight to end cancer feels like a never-ending battle, I am extremely blessed to be joined by friends and family who share my passion to give back and make a difference. I know that Tee Up For Life and all of the efforts made by the American Cancer Society will get us closer to finding a cure!
